How do I search for a character string that has the \ character in it?

In Agent Ransack is it possible to search to the '\' character.

Yes, assuming that you are using the 'Boolean' expression option (specified in the Options tab) you can use '\', e.g.

Containing Text: \r

If you are using regular expressions that you'd need to 'escape' the backslash, e.g.

Containing Text: \\r
