How can I search for a character this in a certain position or range of positions in a text file? For example, I want to find UNIV in position 10 thru 14 in a reacord.

asked by (30 points)

Are you looking to search each line or just first 10-14 chars in the file? Could you please provide some sample data?

You can use a regular expression to 'count' up to a certain number of characters on each line, e.g. to find the text UNIV starting at the 10th character position use the regex:

^.{9}UNIV

If the text could start between 10th and 14th character you can specify a range, e.g.

^.{9,13}UNIV
