Is there a way to exclude file metadata from the search? It seems that a lot of search results are coming up in which the actual word/phrase is not in the files text, but appears in the metadata of the file.

The meta-data of Office file formats is searched during 'raw data' searching. The enhanced file searching settings controls whether or not 'raw data' is included/excluded during searches:

If you don't want raw data searched try this:

  1. In the Options tab, click on the Settings... link.
  2. Select Custom processing settings
  3. Select Use ALL appropriate document extensions
  4. Un-check Also search raw document data of processed files
